ISO/IEC 17020:2026 Requirements for Inspection Bodies Has Been Published
The new edition of ISO/IEC 17020, one of the key reference standards for the accreditation of inspection bodies, was published on 27 March 2026. ISO/IEC 17020:2026 replaces the 2012 edition and updates the requirements concerning the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of inspection bodies.
ISO/IEC 17020 applies to inspection activities involving materials, products, installations, plants, processes, work procedures and services. Its main objective is to ensure that inspection results are produced in a reliable, consistent and impartial manner.
What Has Changed in ISO/IEC 17020:2026?
The new edition introduces important structural and operational changes. One of the most significant changes concerns the independence classification of inspection bodies.
The previous ISO/IEC 17020:2012 edition used Type A, Type B and Type C classifications. In the 2026 edition, this structure has been simplified to Type A and Non-Type A. TÜRKAK Transition Timeline for ISO/IEC 17020:2026
According to the transition policy published by TÜRKAK, new applications based on ISO/IEC 17020:2012 will be accepted until 1 November 2026. After this date, new applications will be accepted according to ISO/IEC 17020:2026.
Existing accredited inspection bodies are expected to complete their preparations for the new revision by 31 July 2027. From 1 August 2027, routine surveillance, scope extension and accreditation renewal assessments will be conducted according to the new standard.
The transition of accreditations based on ISO/IEC 17020:2012 to the new edition is expected to be completed by 27 March 2029.

Transitioning to ISO/IEC 17020:2026 may require more than simply updating existing documents. Organizations should review their management and inspection systems particularly in the following areas:
