ISO 45001 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM CERTIFICATE

Update: 12/03/2019 17:04:00

ABOUT ISO 45001:2018 STANDARD

ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System includes the requirements that must be met for workplaces that want to fulfill their legal obligations regarding occupational health and safety in order to increase business efficiency and achieve the targets set for occupational health and safety. It was first published by the British Standards Institute (BSI) in 1999 under the original name Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard, whose short name is created by combining the initials of these words, can be applied to organizations and business activities in different sectors. Certifying the management system implemented by a business means that the business is evaluated under objective conditions by an external organization or person and approved that it meets the management system conditions. In this context, businesses that want to prove the suitability of the system they implement must apply to the organization that provides certification services by making the necessary preparations in terms of policy, planning, implementation, control and corrective activities and management review in order to enter the certification process of the management system they have created in accordance with ISO 45001.

WHAT IS ISO 45001 CERTIFICATE?

ISO 45001 is an international standard that determines the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). It was published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in March 2018.

ISO 45001 is designed to help organizations of all types and sizes create a safe and healthy workplace for their employees, contractors and other stakeholders. It provides a framework for managing occupational health and safety risks, identifying hazards and implementing controls to minimize or eliminate these risks.

The standard is based on the same high-level structure as other ISO management system standards such as ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate their OHMS with other management systems they may have in place.

ISO 45001 is intended to replace OHSAS 18001, the previous standard for occupational health and safety management. Organizations certified to OHSAS 18001 have a three-year transition period to migrate to ISO 45001.

ISO 45001 certification is a document issued by a certification body that confirms that an organization's occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) meets the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard. The certificate demonstrates that the organization has implemented an effective OHSMS to manage occupational health and safety risks and is committed to improving its performance in this area.

In order for an organization to receive an ISO 45001 certificate, it must first implement an OHSMS that meets the requirements of the standard and then undergo a certification audit by an accredited certification body. During the audit, the certification body will review the organization's OHSMS documents, conduct interviews with employees and management, and evaluate the effectiveness of the OHSMS in managing occupational health and safety risks.

If the organization's OHSMS meets the requirements of the standard, the certification body issues an ISO 45001 certificate that is valid for three years. The organization will be required to undergo regular surveillance audits to maintain its certification and a recertification audit every three years to renew its certification.

HOW TO GET ISO 45001 CERTIFICATE?

To obtain ISO 45001 certification, an organization must follow these general steps:

Understand the ISO 45001 standard: The organization should become familiar with the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard and assess the gap between its existing occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) and the requirements of the standard.

Develop an implementation plan: Based on the gap analysis, the organization should develop a plan to implement the necessary changes to its OHSMS to meet the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.

Implement the OHSMS: The organization must implement the necessary changes to the OHSMS, including developing policies and procedures, training employees, and establishing monitoring and measurement processes.

Conduct an internal audit: The organization should conduct an internal audit of its OHMS to ensure that it meets the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.

Contact a certification body: The organization must contact an accredited certification body to carry out an external audit of its OHSMS. The certification body will evaluate whether the organization's OHSMS meets the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.

Obtaining certification: If the certification body determines that the organization's OHSMS meets the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard, it issues an ISO 45001 certificate.

Maintain certification: The organization must maintain its OHSMS and undergo regular surveillance audits to maintain certification.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ISO 45001 FOR COMPANIES?

It is important to note that achieving ISO 45001 certification is a significant commitment and requires a strong commitment from the organization's leadership and employees to improve occupational health and safety performance.

Improved occupational health and safety performance: ISO 45001 helps identify and control risks to improve worker safety and reduce work-related injuries and illnesses.

Compliance with legal requirements: ISO 45001 certification demonstrates compliance with regulatory and legal obligations regarding health and safety.

Improved reputation: ISO 45001 certification can improve an organization's reputation and credibility with its stakeholders, customers and employees.

Increased operational efficiency: Implementing ISO 45001 can lead to more efficient use of resources, reduced downtime and reduced insurance costs.

Increased employee involvement and commitment: ISO 45001 promotes a culture of health and safety by encouraging employee commitment and participation.

Greater international recognition: ISO 45001 is recognized worldwide and makes it easier to demonstrate commitment to health and safety when working with global partners.

Continuous improvement: The standard includes requirements for continuous improvement of health and safety management systems.

The aim of ISO 45001 is to provide a framework for organizations to manage and improve their occupational health and safety performance, prevent work-related injuries and illnesses, and provide safe and healthy workplaces for employees and other relevant parties. The standard aims to promote a culture of health and safety within organizations, reduce risks and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements regarding occupational health and safety. The ultimate goal is to create safer working environments and protect the well-being of employees and other stakeholders.

HOW IS ISO 45001 AUDIT PERFORMED?

ISO 45001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. An ISO 45001 audit is an independent assessment of an organization's OH&S management system to determine whether it meets the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.

An ISO 45001 audit can be performed by an internal auditor within the organization or an external auditor from a certification body. The audit process usually includes the following steps:

Planning: The auditor plans the audit based on the audit scope, objectives and criteria.

Document review: The auditor reviews the organization's OH&S management system documentation to ensure that it meets the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.

On-site audit: The auditor visits the organization's facilities to verify the implementation and effectiveness of the OSH management system. This includes interviewing staff, observing activities, and reviewing records and documents.

Reporting: The auditor documents the audit findings and prepares a report outlining nonconformities or areas for improvement.

Follow-up: If any nonconformities are detected, the organization must take corrective action and provide the auditor with evidence of the effectiveness of these actions.

The purpose of an ISO 45001 audit is to evaluate the organization's OSH management system against the requirements of the standard and identify improvement opportunities. The audit process helps organizations improve their OSH performance and demonstrate their commitment to the health and safety of their employees and other stakeholders.

WHAT IS THE ISO 45001:2018 CERTIFICATION PROCESS?

Businesses first apply and fill out an application form. The contract and price offer are forwarded to the business. After the contract is signed, a lead auditor is appointed for the certification process. The lead auditor communicates with the business and negotiates the audit date, and then the documents are examined. In the review, the compliance or non-conformity of the documentation with the relevant standard is revealed and it is checked whether the requirements of the standard are met. In case of non-compliance, corrective action forms are submitted to the business. The business under audit determines the root causes and determines the measures to eliminate the non-conformities. Problems must be resolved before certification or pre-audit. Certification examination is carried out by taking samples from objective records. When the certification audit is completed, nonconformities are documented and identified with corrective-preventive actions. If the business cannot resolve these problems, the audit is suspended for 3 months. Certification applications of organizations whose certification audit has not been carried out for 6 months after the application are rejected. As a result of all these stages and document inspection, businesses that comply with the standards receive their documents by hand or by cargo. On average, two months before the document expires, the business applies to us to extend the period. Surveillance inspection is carried out by us every year.

WHAT DOES ISO 45001 COVER?

ISO 45001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. The standard covers a wide range of aspects related to occupational health and safety management in the workplace.

Some of the key areas covered by ISO 45001 include:

Hazard identification and risk assessment: Organizations are required to identify and assess hazards and risks associated with their activities, products and services and take action to eliminate or control these hazards.

Legal and other requirements: Organizations must comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements regarding occupational health and safety, as well as any other requirements they may have voluntarily adopted.

Goals and objectives: Organizations must establish and maintain OH&S goals and objectives that are measurable and consistent with the organization's OH&S policy.

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT CHANGES MADE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is an international standard that provides a framework for occupational health and safety management systems. It was published in March 2018 and replaced the previous standard, OHSAS 18001. The standard aims to improve workplace safety and reduce the risk of work-related injuries and illnesses.

There are several important changes within ISO 45001 compared to the previous standard, OHSAS 18001:

High Level Structure:  ISO 45001 follows the High Level Structure (HLS), a common framework for all ISO management system standards. This makes it easier to integrate occupational health and safety management with other management systems such as quality management, environmental management and information security management.

Risk-based approach: ISO 45001 emphasizes a risk-based approach to occupational health and safety management. Organizations need to identify and assess their risks and implement controls to eliminate or reduce these risks.

Context of the organization: ISO 45001 requires organizations to consider the context in which they operate, including internal and external factors that may affect their occupational health and safety performance.

Leadership and worker participation: ISO 45001 emphasizes the role of leadership in improving occupational health and safety and requires senior management to demonstrate their commitment to the management system. It also emphasizes the importance of worker participation in the management system.

Relevant parties: ISO 45001 requires organizations to identify their relevant parties, such as workers, contractors, suppliers and customers, and consider their needs and expectations regarding occupational health and safety.

Continuous improvement: ISO 45001 requires organizations to continuously improve their occupational health and safety management systems and performance. This involves setting goals, monitoring and measuring performance, and taking corrective action to improve performance.

Overall, ISO 45001 places greater emphasis on a risk-based approach to occupational health and safety management and requires organizations to consider the context in which they operate and the needs and expectations of interested parties. It also emphasizes the importance of leadership and worker participation in improving occupational health and safety and requires organizations to continually improve their performance.

WHAT ARE THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ISO 45001 AND OHSAS 18001?

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, while OHSAS 18001 is a British standard for occupational health and safety management systems. ISO 45001 was published in 2018 and replaced OHSAS 18001.

There are several important differences between ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001:

Framework: ISO 45001 follows the High Level Structure (HLS), a common framework for all ISO management system standards. OHSAS 18001 did not follow HLS.

Risk-based approach: ISO 45001 emphasizes a risk-based approach to occupational health and safety management. OHSAS 18001 also used a risk-based approach, but ISO 45001 places greater emphasis on risk identification and assessment.

Context of the organization: ISO 45001 requires organizations to consider the context in which they operate, including internal and external factors that may affect their occupational health and safety performance. OHSAS 18001 did not require organizations to consider their context.

Leadership: ISO 45001 places greater emphasis on leadership and requires senior management to demonstrate commitment to the management system. OHSAS 18001 has not given as much importance to leadership.

Interested parties: ISO 45001 requires organizations to identify their interested parties and take into account their needs and expectations regarding occupational health and safety. OHSAS 18001 does not require organizations to identify their interested parties.

Continuous improvement: ISO 45001 requires organizations to continuously improve their occupational health and safety management systems and performance. OHSAS 18001 also required continuous improvement, but ISO 45001 places greater emphasis on the need for continuous improvement.

Overall, ISO 45001 places greater emphasis on a risk-based approach to occupational health and safety management and requires organizations to consider the context in which they operate and the needs and expectations of interested parties. It also places greater emphasis on leadership and continuous improvement compared to OHSAS 18001.

With the need for standards regarding occupational safety and worker health, three standards have been determined on this subject. These standards are:

· ILO-OSH 2001
